CK Safety Village


Students are bused from area schools to the administration building, where they receive a full day of safety programming taught by a firefighter, police officer, paramedic and other safety professionals. Bookings are based on a first-come, first-serve basis and teachers are advised to book well in advance.


Grade One and Grade Four practical “hands-on” fire safety programs include the following topics:

Grade One: – Fall Session

  1. Sparky’s ABC fire safety tips
  2. Smoke Alarms – importance and law
  3. Get Low and Go – dangers of smoke
  4. Sparky’s Apartment Kitchen: Cold and Hot – avoiding burns
  5. Sparky’s Apartment Bedroom: Making a home escape plan and practicing ‘GET LOW and GO’ by crawling under smoke and safely exiting the apartment.
  6. Review of calling 911 for an emergency.

Grade Four – Spring Session

  1. Chemistry of Fire – Heat, Fuel, Oxygen
  2. Prevention, Detection and Escape – review how to prevent a fire, the importance and law regarding smoke alarms and early detection, making and practicing a home escape plan.
  3. Practical experience for Prevention, Detection and Escape are practiced in Sparky’s Apartment. They include spotting and correcting fire hazards in the kitchen and bedroom and practicing a home escape plan with smoke and evacuating through the window.
  4. Review of calling 911 for an emergency.

To attend a fire safety program at the Chatham-Kent Children’s Safety Village, teachers are asked to contact the Safety Village directly.
