Student Safety

Students sitting under a tree at Ridgetown Campus

Moving out of the family home and into off-campus housing is an exciting time for post-secondary students. It’s also a time to reflect on the safety of your new residence.

This page will give you the tools you need to assess fire hazards in your new home and what to do about them.

You can reduce your risk – act now.

  1. Download the CK Off Campus Fire Safety Checklist and Rental Housing Guide.
  2. Plan your escape. Know two ways out of every room, especially from sleeping areas.
  3. Test your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm once a month. If there are none, speak to your landlord immediately and/or call Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services at 519.436.3270

Stay fire smart! Don’t get burned. It takes three minutes for toxic smoke to turn a fire deadly.
